Gardai in Naas are investigating the sudden death of an elderly woman who was a patient at Lakeview Unit at Naas Hospital.
Gardai were alerted to the short-term care unit at approximately 5am on Monday, 5 November.
A postmortem examination on the body of the woman was carried out by the State Pathologist, Professor Marie Cassidy, that afternoon.
Garda said, on Monday evening, that the investigation is at a very early stage and relatives were being informed of the sudden passing of the woman.
The Health Service Executive is also to carry out a review.
In a statement to the Leader, it said: “The HSE Dublin Mid-Leinster can confirm that a patient has died at the HSE’s Acute Mental Health Unit at Naas General Hospital. As in all such incidents a review will be carried out in accordance with HSE policy. The HSE Dublin Mid-Leinster extends its sincere sympathy to the patient’s family and will continue to offer support to them.”
Lakeview is a 30-bedded unit which provides short-term care for people with acute mental health needs. Lakeview unit consists of five individual rooms, two six bedded areas, three four bedded areas and a special care suite.
