The green light has been given for the €50m expansion of Kildare Village.

The plans, which will see the Village almost double its size, are expected to yield 190 full time and 190 part time new jobs as well as 120 construction posts. The extension will also result in an extra €5.5m being injected into the economy in wages.

The plans were up for discussion at an oral hearing in late April at Keadeen Hotel, Newbridge.

At the hearing. Whitewater Shopping Centre, Newbridge argued that the extended Village would impact greatly on its business. Meanwhile, the Village contended it needed to expand to attract a greater number of brands, which would then attract more tourists. It denied its expansion would injure business at Whitewater. Value Retail, the company behind Kildare Village, also wanted one of the planning permission conditions overturned, which would allow it to build the entire extension in one phase.

The planning permission is for ten years.
