THIRTEEN years ago, a sick Monasterevin baby took part in a fundraising campaign and photo shoot for Crumlin Hospital, which was spearheaded by athlete and current Senator, Eamon Coghlan.
On March 22, that iconic image was recreated as the runner, who was on a visit to Monasterevin, stepped in to a photo with Brooke Haven and her family.
“When she was a baby, she had major reconstructive surgery. They asked could they use her in a film for Crumlin hospital.
“She was only 16 weeks old, now she is 13 and is in first year at St. Paul’s. She got her photo taken at the time with Eamonn Coghlan,” explained her mum, Mairead.
The photo was hung proudly on the wall where it has remained over the years.
“She came home the other day and said a man called Eamonn Coghlan was coming to the school. We made contact with the school to see if we could get the photo taken. Back then, I didn’t have a clue who he was. Everyone was telling me about him,” she added.
“When he arrived, obviously Eamon ndidn’t recognise Brooke as she was only a tiny baby back then, but he did remember her dad and was interested to find out how she was doing.”
Just last June, Brooke underwent another serious operation to replace a heart value and in approximately ten years, she will have to have it replaced again.
“She is in great form and she is taking part in sports in school which she couldn’t have done before,” explained Mairead.
Her family, who hail from St. Evin’s Park, are no strangers when it comes to helping Crumlin Hospital.
At present up to 50 family members and friends are preparing for a sponsored parachute jump on July 13 and 14.
Sponsorship cards are being distributed locally. There are also plans for her dad to climb Kilimanjaro in a major fund raiser next year.
