A young man who was involved in a car accident in the early hours of New Year’s Day appeared at Naas District Court last Wednesday, June 13, charged with driving while drunk.

Stephen Fitzgerald whose address is listed as Brockagh, Robertstown, was arrested by Garda Michael Donovan on January 1 at Firmount Cross, Clane.

At 3am that morning, gardai responded to a call following a crash at Firmount Cross where two cars were involved.

The driver of one of the cars failed a breath test.

A further test revealed a concentration of 135 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of urine was detected which is on the lower end.

This, gardai felt, was the primary cause of the accident.

“He felt he hadn’t taken too much by that time,” his solicitor explained.

The defendant was fully insured on the night.

The occupants of the other car suffered superficial injuries.

The defendant has been disqualified for a year and fined €250.
