An information meeting on the review of the ‘Fair Deal’ nursing home payment scheme will be held in Athy this afternoon, Tuesday, June 26.
The meeting will be run by Engage Kildare, which is a forum for older people and older folk organisations in the county.
It will take place at 2pm at the Clanard Court Hotel.
The ‘Fair Deal’ scheme was devised in 2009 as a method of payment for private nursing home care.
Under the scheme, those availing of private nursing homes pay 80 percent of their incomestowards nursing home fees, and up to a maximum of 15 percent of their estate is eligible to be recovered by the State after they have passed away.
A scheduled review of the scheme is currently underway, and members of the public are being invited to make submissions on it.
According to the organisers, it is important that submissions are made now, as the scheme could be tweaked to the disadvantage of the elderly, especially as the property market has collapsed.
The meeting will explain the ‘Fair Deal’ scheme as it is at the moment, and give details as to how to make submissions.
Other items on the agenda will deal with Men’s Sheds which are popping up all over the County, the Changeover to Digital TV and on promoting Positive Mental Health in Older People.
Free transport to the meeting can be arranged by calling Denise on 0871411669.
