Gardai in Kildare town are investigating the overnight theft of signalling cable from the local railway station, which resulted in mass delays to rail services this morning.

A length of cabling, which was part of the signals network, was stolen between the end of rail services at 11.30pm on Wednesday night and the first services at 5.30am on Thursday morning.

Iarnrod Eireann was alerted that the signalling system was down this morning, and staff were mobilised on the ground to manually assist with signalling. This resulted in between 30 and 50 minute train delays into and out of Heuston Station until 8.45am, when the system had been repaired and normal service resumed.

Jane Cregan, spokesperson for Iarnrod Eireann, stressed that at no time had passenger safety been in danger. “If there is a threat to the system at all, nothing can move,” she said.

Ms Cregan added that there had been several such incidents recently.

Anyone who may have information on the theft is asked to contact Kildare town garda station on 045 527730.
