Newbridge native Robert Heavey has put up a €500 reward for anybody with information regarding the recent robbery of bog oak from Clongorey bog with an estimated value of €3,500.

“I have been robbed three times in the last six weeks there,” he told the Leinster Leader last week.”My bog oak has been stolen each time and last Tuesday morning they left the gate open and my horses got out on the road.

“I have seven horses down there and that is a very busy road from Newbridge to Blacktrench. There are young people travelling that road going to work early in the morning and it could have been the cause of a tragic accident. Bog oak can be replaced but a young person’s life cannot.”

According to Robert, the thieves must have some local knowledge of the area and that is why he is offering the reward.

“They must have taken it to order,” he said. “I have huge pieces down there. You would need a chain saw – it is not easy to cut bog oak. There would have been three or four lads to lift the pieces at least. They had to have local knowledge – no stranger could go into the bog and know his way around.” You can contact Robert on 086 336457.
