THE recession may be hitting towns hard but community spirit is as strong as ever as local voluntary groups line up to take part in an open night in Kildare town next month.

Kildare Town Community Forum are organising the event and it reports that interest has been significant with limited places left. The open night takes place on Thursday October 27 in the CYMS Hall.

“This is a great way for the community to check out what groups, services and organisations are available to the people of Kildare Town. We will also be running a pumpkin decorating workshop on the day and the pumpkins will then be on display that evening in the CYMS. There will also be a prize for best dressed stall as we are hoping this information evening will also be a fun one!,” said a spokesperson for the forum.

The team behind the event includes Donna Hill, Eadaoin Ni Ghiosain, Alma Lynch, Kevin O’Kelly and Cllr Suzanne Doyle. The closing date for registration is September 30. Interested parties can call 087 6753495. The Kildare Town Community Forum meets on the first Tuesday of every month at 7.30pm in the day care centre. The group campaigns for improvements in the local area and its successes to date include the re-opening of a community crèche which was closing due to cutbacks. It also launched a library petition for extension of hours to include Saturdays, and ensured that a Citizens Information Centre service became available in the town on Tuesday mornings. Another latest development includes the provision of FAS courses in the Kildare Enterprise Centre.
