Artist and former Newbridge bank manager, Michael Hanrahan was granted the royal seal of approval to capture on canvas the recent State visit of President Michael D Higgins to the UK.
No stranger to the Queen, Michael was the only artist accreditated bt the Deptartment of Foreign Affairs for the Queen’s historic visit to Kildare in 2011. Her Majesty accepted Michael’s gift of a painting, ‘The Queen and President McAleese at the Garden of Remembrance’ and Michael delivered it personally to Buckingham Palace in August 2011.
Michael is planning to paint a number of the key moments of The President’s visit to London and Her Majesty has agreed to see the finished work.
In a letter from Buckingham Place, addressed to Michael and dated January, 28 last the Queen’s private secretary, Edward Young, said that the palace would be ‘very pleased to see copies’ of his work after the historic visit has taken place’. The letter also stated that although formal accreditation or special access could not be granted to artists, the Palace would have no objection to ‘your painting of any public elements’ of the visit’.
Meanwhile, the Irish Defence Forces musicians performed on Thursday in the Royal Albert Hall for President Michael D. Higgins and Duke and Duchess of Kent.
