Matt Browne, Co-ordinator of REHAB Co Kildare People of the Year Awards, has announced the winners for this year’s award ceremony.
The awards will be held at The Keadeen Hotel in Newbridge on Friday, November 1. Ten community achievers will be recognised this year, including International Award Winner, Michael Reade of Kilcullen, for his work in Africa with the Patsy Furlong Foundation.
Ironically this year, there are no group nominations in the final shake-up, despite HOPE (D) and Naas Care of the Elderly being selected as overall winners for the past two years respectively.
This year’s finalists include eight individuals, amongst them Stan Hickey, Naas; Dave Henshaw, Athy; Johnny Doyle of Allenwood; Tom McDermott, Newbridge; Maureen Abbott, Celbridge; Evelyn Moyles Sheehy, Newbridge; Town Commissioner Teresa Byrne of Leixlip and Paddy Phelan of Kildare Town.
The final place went to Julie Gerry, Captain of the Irish Ladies Fly Fishing Association and team member, Jennifer Casey of Clane who took gold in a summer international competing against England, Scotland and Wales. The REHAB awards committee compiling of Matt Browne, Seamus Morahan, Vincent Kelly and Edel Curran Browne will acknowledge the huge contribution of the late Michael Sheeran, a former editor of the Leinster Leader, who sadly passed away earlier this year.
“Michael was on the judging panel for years, along with PJ Gorey and Ellen Dillon. We will all miss his no-nonsense, practical approach to compiling and weighing up the finalists’ contribution to their respective communities and charities. However, we will also miss his wit and quirky sense of humour” added Matt. “On behalf of the committee, I’d like to congratulate the successful finalists and remind that they have been nominated because their selfless commitment is appreciated”.
The awards are organised by REHAB and sponsored by Kildare County Council; full list of individual sponsors will be recognised in later media publications. For tickets, contact Matt on 087 265 4582.
