Plans are in train for a new community text scheme in Maynooth.

At the Glenroyal Hotel hotel on 10 September, a public meeting, the second on the plan, took place to explain thescheme.

Organiser, Naoise O’Cearuil, a Fianna Fail election candidate, said the the aim was to make Maynooth safer and encourage community spirit.

The meeting, attended by the Gardai, heard of successful schemes in rural areas, such as Ladychapel, Maynooth and Kilcloone, but also urban areas, like Sallynoggin in Dublin.

A steering committee has been agreed and it will formulate a text plan to be agreed by the community and the Gardai in Maynooth and Leixlip.

It is expected the Gardai will announce details of a template plan for the country as a whole shortly.

The plan will involve people contacting the Gardai first over suspicious activity and, if required, the Gardai will then contact someone who will alert smaller or bigger groups. A text could be aimed at a particular estate such as Carton or Moyglare.
