Sean and Emily were the most popular Kildare baby names registered in 2011. That is according to figures released by the Central Statistics Office last week. Emily was also the most popular name for girls in the whole of the country, while the most popular boys’ name was Jack, as it has been every year since 2007.
Neither Jack nor Sean were the most popular name in Leinster or the Mid-East region (Kildare, Meath, Wicklow), where boys were more commonly named James. It is the second consecutive year that Sean has been the most popular boys’ name in Kildare. Before that, in 2009, the county went with the rest of Ireland in choosing Jack most often.
The top names for girls have seen a bit more change than the most popular boys’ names over recent years. It is the first time that Emily has been the most popular name in the whole of the country. In the two previous years, Sophie topped the list and before that, Ava did. In Kildare, the most picked name in 2010 was Lucy, while in 2009 Sophie was the most popular.
