There was great excitement last Wednesday night at Newbridge Athletic Club as the club played host to one of the official Olympic torches.
The torch, which was presented at the club by Newbridge native and Dublin garda Peter Hayde, drew a good turnout to the club.
“The torch is going into the Garda museum,” said Jim Cardiff from the Athletic Club.
“It is the one they used going around Ireland a few months ago. All the kids got to hold it as well as the senior groups so it was a fun event.”
“It was a real honour to have the Olympic Torch which had the official Olympic stamp on the front. It is very light.”
As for the Olympics 2012 which will be held later in London this month, Jim will be heading over to watch the heats of the womens hurdles.
“I’m very excited,” he added.
“I used to run cross country and I ran the odd marathon or two. I doubt if I will ever see the Olympics this near to home again.”
