Residents in the Assumpta Villas area of Kildare town were on the alert this week after a family pet was savagely attacked by what appeared to be a pit bull.

The aggressive black dog went into the front garden of a house in the estate where a girl was playing with her two pet dogs, and local residents fear a child may be next unless the dog is found and muzzled.

“My daughter said he came into the garden and was sniffing around our dogs, then just went for one,” said owner Lydia Lee.

“I heard my daughter screaming and when I looked out the window our poor little dog was being shaken, it was horrific.”

She added that her quick thinking daughter threw a flicker at the dog and he backed off. The family then managed to get their two pet dogs safely into the house.

Missy needed about 12 stitches to her ripped bottom lip, jaw and neck. A rescue dog, she is a cross between a jack russell and a whippet, and won the high jump competition at the Wag and Bone competition a few days before the incident.

“Missy is on the mend but this is the second incident involving what appears to be the same dog and people are naturally worried. The children here are watchful now in case the dog comes back.”
