Saint Vincent de Paul has pledged to finance a homeless outreach service for two more years at Michael Garry House in Eyre St, Newbridge, on the condition that a national qualified agency, selected by Kildare County Council (KCC), runs the shelter.

SVP has also offered the local homeless shelter in Newbridge to Kildare County Council at a low rent as an emergency accommdation for the homeless.

“SVP will make the property available at a peppercorn rent to any national qualified agency selected by KCC and the matter is currently under consideration by the Council,” said Andy Heffernan, SVP National Secretary.

“If the Council supports the proposed temporary supported accomodation with an outreach service by St Vincent DePaul, SVP will finance the outreach service for two years.

“It is our desire to see an appropriate financially sustainable service for homeless persons located in the Eyre St property to meet a real contemporary need in line with current policy in the homeless sector. We are very grateful for the on-going support of Kildare County Council and for the long-standing and generous financial support from the people and community of Newbridge and Kildare.”

The shelter has been closed for a month due to a disagreement over its future usage. SVP had wanted to change the terms of use from a men’s only shelter to a women and childrens only shelter. There was some local oppostion to the move however and the shelter was temporarily closed.

Last week Cllr Willie Crowley in a statement alleged that he believed KCC were complicit in the events which brought about the temporary closure of the shelter and called on KCC to be reveal their position.

KCC, however refused to comment.
