Caldwell to run in local election despite defeat

FIANNA Fail Town Councillor, Bernard Caldwell, who was defeated in the party’s Celbrige area selection convention on 3 October, said he is going to run in next years’s local elections.

Fifty one delegates elected Cllr. Frank O’Rourke and Gráinne Whelan, with Town Cllr. Bernard Caldwell losing the vote.

Cllr Caldwell is the only FF town councillor but delegates voted to select two candidates, Cllr. Frank O’Rourke, Celbridge, and Leixlip based solicitor, Grainne Whelan, were selected with O’Rourke getting 37 votes, compared to 7 for Caldwell. On the second count, Ms. Whelan received 15 transfers compared to two each for Cllr. Caldwell..

Cllr. Caldwell said he received six of the combined Leixlip/Confey cummainn 13 votes.

“I will be running, whether for Fianna Fail or not,” Cllr. Caldwell told the Leader this week.

He said at a meeting with FF leader, Michael Martin, in Clane, Mr. Martin assured all sitting councillors they would be on the party ticket.

He is awaiting a reply from the party on that promise.
