A half an acre of land has been zoned for a skateboard park in a prime town centre location.
The council owned land at the Machinery Yard will also be home to a new €100,000 facilty waiting to be housed by Newbridge Community Development (NCS) as part of the new zoning of lands for the Newbridge Local Area Plan.
Cllr Fiona O’Loughlin, who proposed the motion at last weeks council meeting, said the County Manager was against it.
“I proposed that we rezone half an acre in the Machinery Yard for the new NCD building and a skateboard park and it got through,” she said.
“Cllr Nolan seconded my proposal. It is an ideal site. It is beside the Whitewater Shopping Centre, beside the cinema and there are no housing esates nearby.
“I have now put in a motion for the Kildare Area Meeting, which will be held on Wednesday, for the council to enter into meaningful negociation to ensure the NCD building goes in there and the skateboard park.”
Funding for the park, which is estimated to cost €80,000 or more to build, will be ringfenced out of the next development levies for recreational activities.
“We ringfenced the next set of recreational funding,“ she said. “Four percent of the development levies must be ringfenced for recreatonal activities by Kidare County Council.”
Meanwhile the NCD building, which was given to the community development group by local pharmaceutical company, Pfizer, is currently in storage.
“NCD will transport it to the Machinery Yard,” she added.
“The building is a pre-fab worth €100,000 and is currently in blocks in storage.”
The Newbridge Local Area Plan is currently on public display at Aras Chill Dara.
