Deputy Catherine Murphy was asked to leave the Dail this morning after a clash with the Ceann Comhairle.

The row erupted during this morning’s Order of Business.

The Technical Group had nominated Deputy Murphy to represent them in the absence of any party leaders within the group. Dáil standing orders state that only designated leaders of recognised parties can speak on Order of Business. There are currently no parties with more than one member within the Technical Group and as such there are no party leaders.

Deputy Murphy had asked the Ceann Comhairle, in writing, to allow discretion in this matter until the Standing Orders could be changed.

She wished to address the Dail on Financial Emergency Measures in the Public Interest Bill.

“I’ve been two years trying to have this ridiculous Standing Order changed. I had anticipated this problem today and I have written to the Ceann Comhairle, I had flagged it as a looming issue and I’ve repeatedly tried to have the Standing Orders changed in order to deal with such a situation arising,” said the North Kildare independent deputy, who was suspended from the Dail.
