Audi are busy little beavers, I think at this stage they have a car to suit everyone and by everyone I mean Joe Blogs that has two kids, a wife and lives in a 3 bedroom semi detached house with a small driveway.
He commutes 30kms each way Monday to Friday and needs a car with a big enough boot to take a buggy because one child is old enough to walk; now that’s profiling.
Fear not, if you fit into Joe Blogs category you’ll find an Audi to suit your needs. One of those Audi’s might be the new A3 Saloon or Sedan if you want international speak. The A3 hatch is already a very capable hatchback, in terms of luxury feeling in a hatchback there isn’t much to keep up with it. Now they’ve lengthened it and put a boot on it the Irish market should go mad for it. The thing is, it was actually made for the Chinese market because they, like us, see a Saloon as a status symbol.
There might be a problem though, there is nothing wrong with the Audi A4 which is already a Saloon and if you’re into the Saloon body shape you could do a lot worse than the A4 with a 2.0TDi under the bonnet. Now this is where things get tricky, the A3 isn’t all that much shorter than the A4 butit’s this difference in length that makes the A3 look more sporty. There’s still a practical boot and, if truth be told, there’s little difference in the back seat.
We only got to look at the A3 so I can’t comment on how it drives but it’s an Audi so it’ll be a sure footed, slightly understeery, efficient sort of drive. It’ll be in the showrooms towards the end of summer, the price is likely to be around the €31,000 mark which puts it below the A4 and about a grand above a similar spec A3 Sportback. There’s an S3 on the way too, now that’s set to be good if what I hear from Audi is to believed it’ll have 300hp!
You’ll find the A3 Saloon in the home for Audi in Kildare, Audi Naas 045 906666 towards the end of summer.
