Plans have been lodged to convert part of the Presentation Convent school in Kildare into a new €2m Lidl store.
The development, which, if approved, will be located just a short distance from the current store. It is expected to bring 24 construction jobs and up to 20 full time posts when open. Although there is no mention of the current store in the plans, it is expected this would be vacated once the new development is open.
The project will see the original school being split into two. Owners, The Educena Foundation, which is a Catholic school property trust, has lodged a planning application for offices while the other half will facilitate the new discount store. Lidl want to demolish an extension to the building as well as prefabs. The store and off licence covers 1,860sqm and will also include 87 car parking spaces with access onto Dublin Street.
Lidl estimates that between 15 and 20 jobs will be provided at he store generating E721,000 per year in wages in addition to spin off business created locally. It is unclear if the people currently working in the Kildare store will transfer to the new building. It is estimated it will take up to six months to complete.
This week, the Educena Foundation Ltd will learn if it it has the go ahead for the change of use of the 1937 primary school building from education to office use.
