This week I’d like to tell you about a fantastic group that promote sighthounds as pets in Ireland.
The initiative Sighthound Strolls was set up in 2011 by two caring and proud owners of sighthounds. Jane Burke and Suzanne Ryan wanted to unite owners of pet sighthounds in Ireland by arranging regular walks.
The dogs and their loving owners meet on a Sunday morning once a month in different locations in Dublin.
The sighthound owners get to meet likeminded people and chat about their love for the pointy noses.
The strolls are also open to people thinking of adopting a sighthound. Rescues and people who are fostering sighthounds are also welcome to tag along.
Jane and Suzanne also work very hard with promoting sighthounds as pets and hope to roll out a campaign later this year to encourage more people to adopt these loving couch potatoes.
The `sighthound’ groups includes greyhounds, whippets, salukis, and wolfhounds etc., as well as their mixes.
There are many misconceptions about sighthounds as pets. One of them been that they need hours of exercise - this is not the case. Many are happy with two to three half-hour walks a day. They are basically lazy dogs and will relax and sleep for much of the day.
They love their creature comforts and will need a soft comfy bed. If they are allowed, they will love nothing better than to stretch out on your bed or sofa.
Another misconception is that sighhounds are vicious and hates smaller dogs, cats and furry animals. Again, this is not the case.
They are generally friendly and affectionate with humans and are usually wonderful with children.
There is a large number of them also good with cats and other small animals.
The ladies behind sighthound strolls also help rescues rehome rescued sighties and will help anyone looking for a sighthound as a pet find one suitable for their family. There has been such a great success with the Dublin strolls that there are now strolls organized monthly in Galway, Cork and hopefully this year there will be a Kildare one too.
If you are a proud sighthound owner, thinking of adopting one as a pet or want to find out more please check out Sighthounds Strolls on Facebook.
