Kildare County Council has uncovered two unauthorised waste storage locations at Kildoon, Nurney and Crinnstown, Maynooth, writes Paula Campbell.
And the council has not discounted the possibility that there may be further unauthorised sites in the county.
In both cases the material has been described as ‘baled shredded municipal type waste’ - there were 3000 bales at Nurney and 2,000 bales at Maynooth. A statement from the council confirmed that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) - are also assisting with ‘ongoing investigations’.
“Initial indications would suggest that the waste, in both instances, is from the same source,” read the statement.
“The sites were identified in the past fortnight and the site owners, as well as the owners of the waste, were directed to remove it to an authorised site, by a permitted collector. All waste, in both cases, has since been removed.
“All matters are being followed-up and both Kildare County Council and the EPA will continue to work together to bring all issues to a conclusion. In addition, the council will be carrying out further inspections of the sites to ensure that any potential environmental concerns are fully addressed,” the council stated.
