There was no resolution reached at last weeks crisis meeting between the Kildare Municipal area and the St Vincent de Paul over the change of use of a men only homeless hostel in Newbridge to a shelter for women and children however it was proposed to hand over the running of it to the Council.
A call has now been made by local councillors to appoint an independent mediator to help resolve the change of use issue at Michael Garry House in Newbridge. Cllr Suzanne Doyle said that the members heard from the St Christopher Conference of the Society. “It is the view of members that every effort be made to pursue a reasonable resolution to this problem to retain a homeless service for men in the region,” she said, adding that they are proposing that both sides engage with an independent professional mediator to explore this.
SVP spokesperson Jim Walsh said that the premises will cease to operate as an SVP emergency facility for men at the end of the month as planned. “As of this week alternative accommodation had been secured for all but two residents. The SVP and KCC are both committed to keeping it in operation as a service for homeless people.” Meanwhile nearly 300 people have signed a petition to call on SVP to provide emergency accommodation at the shelter for all local homeless people.
