Former Fianna Fail TD for Kildare South, Sean Power, who was selected on Sunday night to run in the upcoming local elections for the Newbridge and Kildare area, is “delighted” with the nomination despite the late nod.
Mr Power was added late to the ticket alongside Cllr Fiona O’Louglin and Cllr Suzanne Doyle for Newbridge and Kildare on Sunday night by the National Constituencies Committee.
The FF veteran, who spoke of his public humiliation by the party last week after his name was left off the recent selection convention for the area, said it is a matter now of working as a team.
“I don’t withdraw anything I said already which was all factual but the focus now is on the three candidates that have been selected. It is a matter now of knuckling down and working as a team effort.”
Mr Power, who lost his seat in 2011, says he will focus his campaign on local job creation.
“There is little to what can be achieved at local elections but all our energies should be diverterd to creating employment. People are just surviving out there, although there is a little hope, but people are mainly struggling to make ends meet. It is all about job creation and giving people the tools to move on. ”
Mr Power added that he is “excited” about the local elections, which will take place on Friday, May 23. There are nine seats up for grabs in the Newbridge and Kildare electoral area and he hopes Fianna Fail can secure three of those.
“I am excited about it,” he said adding that he had been laid up a lot with illness since he lost his Dail seat, but is now better once more.
“It is like I am running for my first election all over again. I had approaches made by FF asking me to run for Europe but my focus is solely on the local elections.”
