LEIXLIP Town Council has called on Kildare County Council to urgently make an application to the Department of Sport for funding for the north Kildare swimming pool project at Leixlip Amenities Centre, writes Henry Bauress

Proposing, chairperson, Cllr. Teresa Byrne, said the application should be made in view of a €19m allocation which includes the Local Authority swimming pool programme.

While the Council is making the application, hopes of success are not high.

Town Manager, Peter Minnock, said the funding would be more for refurbishment work on existing pools.

Cllr. Byrne said the statement did not rule out new pools but Cllr. Anthony Larkin said they should not raise expections and a lot of sports organisations are in big trouble. “It won’t happen,” he said.

Cllrs. Shane Fitzgerald and Bernard Caldwell said they should seek support from Intel and Hewlett Packard. Cllr. Colm Purcell envisaged a public private project as pools are very expensive to run. Cllr. Sean Purcell said they should have had a public pool years ago.
