TriAthy will take place for the sixth time this coming June bank holiday weekend.
Some 800 hardy souls have already signed up. Among them are local garda Sean O’Mahony and businesswoman Wendy Kavanagh, both from Athy, who are taking up the challenge in a new SixWeeksToTri competition.
Local garda Sean O’Mahony is both nervous and excited. “I want to loose the weight and that is a goal I want to complete,” he explained. Sean has been training with Athy TriClub for several weeks now.
“It’s going well. The swim will be tough but I’m aiming to do it anyway.” He is hoping to race in the Try event, with the aim of a double Olympic next year! “My aim is to keep up with my young fella,” he joked.
Businesswoman Wendy Kavanagh decided to take part for health reasons. “I’m 50 and I am not a sporty person,” explained the mom-of-six. “I had a clot in my leg last year, so I’m getting fit and health so it doesn’t happen again. I haven’t swim since school but I’m delighted I am getting the chance to swim the Barrow.” Check out their blogs on www.facebook.com/6weekstotry).
Meanwhile Athy Town Council heard at its monthly meeting, the annual triathlon brings huge spin-off business to the Kildare South town.
