Sinn Fein has accused the Government of not taking public transport into consideration when assigning social welfare offices to people in Monasterevin and Rathangan.

Mark Lynch is calling for dole recipients to have the option to travel to Newbridge.

““Both myself and Brian Stanley have constantly heard complaints from people in Rathangan and Monasterevin regarding the serious problem of having to travel miles to collect their social welfare,” he said.

A Department spokesperson pointed out; “There is a regular train service between Monasterevan and Portarlington (8 return trains daily). There is also a bus service between Bracknagh and Portarlington on Tuesdays and Thursdays leaving at 10am and returning at 1pm.” They said jobseekers have to attend Portarlington once a month to sign on’ but can collect payment in a Post office closer to their home with most chosing Monasterevan and Rathangan branches. Customers, who live more than 10 miles from Portarlington, can also go on ‘postal signing’ where they only have to attend Portarlington every three months.
