Over 600 Kildare women travelled to the UK between 2008 amd 2011 to have an abortion.
That’s according to new figures obtained by Cork journalist Joe Leogue, who sought the information for the entire country, from the UK Department of Health under a Freedom of Information request.
Many women may opt not to give their correct address. In fact 2,310 women, who gave an Irish address, failed to specify a county.
According to the figures, 141 Kildare women had a UK abortion in 2008, 171 in 2009, 173 in 2010 and 157 in 2011. The statistics show that 484 were single and 110 were married. Sixty six of the Kildare women were aged under 20, while 165 were aged between 20 and 24.
