KILDARE drama groups were just pipped at the post by Kilmeen Drama Group at the 2011 All Ireland Drama Festival last weekend, writes Niamh O’Donoghue.
The West Cork winners came up against stiff competition from Prosperous Dramatic Society, who came second with their production of “November” by David Mamet and from Silken Thomas Players, Kildare who came in third place with “Angels in America” by Tony Kushner.
The awards were held in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Athlone last Saturday night, April 7.
In announcing the award winner, adjudicator John P Kelly commended the overall acting, technical and production skills of all the participating groups, but when it came to deciding which group was true to the writer’s intentions, Kilmeen’s production had the edge.
Kildare scooped an additional honour with the award for Best Stage Management going to Maria Flanagan for Silken Thomas Players production.
Festival Director Billy Nott congratulated all the award winners on their successes.
The Bradan Players from Leixlip had also qualified for the festival with their performance of ‘Tom and Viv’. All three groups had taken part in drama festivals all over the country and won numerous awards along the way.
