A 76-year-old-year Newbridge pensioner was mugged in broad daylight while in her wheelchair on way home to Dara Park from the shops last Sunday afternoon.

Vera English, from Dara Park, was returning from Tesco’s at 4.15pm when her bag was ripped off her person as she entered Dara Park.

“I went to Tesco yesterday evening to get for an hour,” said Vera speaking after her ordeal to the Leinster Leader. “It was around 4.15pm and I was near the shop here in Dara Park when I saw a fella crossing the road. He said ‘it’s very cold’ and I said ‘yes it is’ and so my guard was down.”

The young man walked on but then suddenly turned back to grab the handbag.

“He grabbed my bag and pulled at it,” she recalled. “The strap broke and it came out from under my coat and he ran off with it.” The young man was between 17 and 19 years, of thin build and pale.

“He was wearing a round hat and I think his head must be shaved,” she added. “He had a scar on his left cheek about an inch long. My pension card was in my bag and my purse. I just want my things back. Someone must know him.”
