A fire in an apartment complex in Athy is being investigated by the gardai.

It occurred on Saturday night last (November 16) at Nelson Street some time after 8.30.

A number of families were evacuated from the complex after the fire started although it is understood that nobody was injured in the incident.

The source of the incident was a van, which was parked in the underground car park and went on fire.

It is not clear how the vehicle went ablaze.

The residential development is known as The Harbour and it is understood that not all of the residences are currently occupied.

Many of the apartments there are rented out command monthly rents of about €550 for a two bedroom residence to around €460 for a one bedroom home.

The apartments are fairly centrally located between the canal and Woodstock Street, not far from the main road running through the town. Four units of the Fire Service from Counties Kildare and Laois tackled the fire.

However the Leader understands that most of the damage sustained in the fire resulted from smoke.
