Death of long-serving Athy Councillor

Paddy Wright, a long time town councillor in Athy, has died.

Paddy Wright, a long time town councillor in Athy, has died.

It is understood he died in his sleep during the course of Thursday night/Friday morning, January 6/7.

The 72 year old was a member of Sinn Fein. He was first elected to Athy Town Council in 1985 and served on the County Council for a number of terms.

As a younger man he was a noted footballer for both Castlemitchell and Kildare.

He was a passionate and committed community activist and despite political differences he was widely liked by those of all political persuasions, and warm tribute to him.

He once admitted that when he left school at the age of 13 he could neither read nor write, and maintained a passion for self-education for the rest of his days.
