The garda helicopter was called in to search for two armed raiders who targeted Athy Post Office earlier this morning.
At approximately 9.45am, two males pulled up outside the post office. One stood look out, while the other entered the premises and jumped the counter. He escaped with an undisclosed sum of money.
It is understood the men then hijacked a silver Peugeot 307. It is believed they ordered the female driver to exit the car at gun point. The duo then travelled in the direction of the Kilkenny Road. Gardai in Athy are investigating the incident.
It is understood there was a number of customers in the Post Office at the time. The first man was believed to have been wearing a motorcycle helmet and black clothing. The second culprit wore a scarf to cover his face and is also believed to have been wearing dark coloured clothes.
