Pop sensations Jedward, who grew up in Rathangan, have been named the ‘Finest Things’ in Ireland after an online vote from over ten thousand women.
The Eurovision duo, known for their trademark quiffs and spangly suits, beat off some stiff competition in the annual Beaut.ie poll. They knocked The Voice’s Bressie into second place and rugby hunk Tommy Bowe into third.
Naas man and Irish rugby star Jamie Heaslip made it a double for the Lilies in the Top Ten, ranking eighth overall, just behind movie stars Colin Farrell and Liam Neeson.
Today FM DJ and current Kildare tourism ambassador Ray D’Arcy, who is from Kildare town, also scored a hit for the silver foxes. He came in at 42 on the list, just behind Leinster and Ireland player Cian Healy and well ahead of Pierce Brosnan and Ryan Tubridy.
The Grimes twins denied Tommy Bowe, who has Kildare roots as his mother Ann is from near Milltown, a three-in-a-row hattrick. The Monaghan man has topped the poll in the last two years.
The annual Beaut.ie list, now in its fifth year, is released every St Patrick’s Day. It’s a “celebration of all things fabulous about Irish men. It celebrates the good and the great, the funny and the brainy across the spectrum”, say the popular online women’s interest blog. The list is voted on each February by the 350,000 monthly visitors to the blog.
Votes flooded in for the Jeds as soon as voting opened, said the poll organisers, adding: “What can we say? Mna na hEireann have voted - in their thousands - and what the women of Ireland decree to be sexy goes in this most democratic of voting processes.”
The list also threw up some unexpected results, with RTE newsreader Bryan Dobson ranking above rugby hunks Sean O’Brien and Donncha O’Callaghan and Westlife stars Nicky Byrne and Shane Filan.
