The Newbridge water tower should be cleaned up, painted and incorporate a "Welcome to Newbridge" sign to transform the eyesore, according to Cllr Morgan McCabe.

Speaking at last Wednesday's Kildare Newbridge Municipal District meeting, he explained; "as all the entrances to to the town of Newbridge are very scenic and well-maintained, the entrance from the Kilcullen and Military Road side is dominated by the ageing water tower."

"If the water tower is council owned, would the council consider the painting of the structure, possibly with the inclusion of the town name and logo," he asked.

The council said it will investigate the ownership of the tower and report back to the October meeting.

Cllr McCabe said he looked forward to hearing what could be done with this "ugly edifice".
