This year’s Kildare Rose didn’t make it to the Rose of Tralee festival. But at least one Kildare girl will be there.
Sheila McAndrew from Rathcoffey was chosen as Darwin Rose over the weekend and will now take part in the famous festival in August.
Her mother Anne told the Leinster Leader of her delight at hearing the news on Saturday, having not seen Sheila since she moved to the city in Australia’s Northern Territory.
“She moved over there about three years ago,” Anne said. “She hasn’t been back since then.” So the joy and excitement surrounding Sheila’s achievement will be all the sweeter for the McAndrew family in Rathcoffey, since it means she will be coming home.
“It’s fantastic news,” said Anne, who said the family had received lots of calls and messages from well-wishers since hearing the news. “She’ll be back for at least two weeks (for the festival).”
