Officials from Kildare County Council have pledged to look at the possbility of using council land at Ardrew, Athy, for sports facilities.
Cllr Mark Wall has welcomed the news that the Architects department of Kildare County Council are to examine his proposal to use council lands at Ardrew for additional playing fields for the many sports clubs within the town.
Cllr Wall was speaking following a motion that he had placed to the Athy area committee, where there was unanimous support to examine the site and its potential for community use.
“The great work of the many sports clubs in the town must be complemented by additional facilities,” he said.
“We have a situation where many clubs are finding space to play and train more difficult as their numbers grow, thankfully this is because of the many young people from the town taking up sport but also with the very welcome and growing increase in the participation of ladies in various team sports.
“You add in the prospect of the Southern Distributor road taking in some of the current playing fields then the need to investigate the potential of these lands becomes more urgent.
“I look forward to a follow up report from the Council on these lands in the quickest possible time and their potential to be developed with the assistance of the Council.”
