Signs are good for Athy by-pass funding

THERE was good news for Athy on Friday that the traffic-congested town will finally get its much-need multimillion Athy southern distributor route after a long road of court actions, Bord Pleanala hearings and 34 years of waiting. The project will have a very significant bearing on the future development of Athy as a major regional centre in its own right. The road, which was first mooted in 1978, will run from the Castledermot Road, by the back of the Rugby Club, along Aughaboura and the disused railway line, onwards to the Kilkenny Road, via Dunbrinn. Indeed at one stage the town was divided for several years over the proposed inner relief road, but consensus was reached in more recent times.

Emmet Stagg

Call for a community welfare office

LABOUR TD Emmet Stagg has demanded that a Community Welfare public office be opened in Naas. He recalled it was intended to open an office the Sarto Road Health Centre when it was vacated by Public Health Nursing staff in late 2010. This move fell through in early 2011. Minister Joan Burton has told Dep. Stagg that options for a dedicated building have been explored over the last 18 months but none have come to fruition. The situation is “under review” and will be considered further having regard to the integration of the Social Welfare, Community Welfare and FAS services. Deputy Stagg welcomed the fact a public office remains an objective of the Department. Deputy Stagg stated that people seeking assistance with mortgage payments, rental payments, exceptional needs payments or supplementary welfare payments, have to use a postal based or freephone service to access their entitlements.

Concern that KCC may not be able to pay its road staff

Kildare County Council is under huge finanical pressure in terms of its roads programme and there is growing concern that it may not be able to pay its staff wages for the year, writes Lisa Deeney.

This is according to a recent Athy area committee meeting. Cllr Martin Miley asked for an update on the present funding situation for the Roads Department of the Athy Electoral Area. “The funding situation for the roads department for 2012 is extremely precarious,” a Kildare County Council report stated.

“Due to the reduction in grants from central government and the reduction in rates income, it has been necessary to substantially reduce the budgets of all of the area offices. The Athy electoral area has recently been made aware of its allocations for local and regional roads and discussions are ongoing with the senior engineer to determine if the area can continue to operate and to pay wages for the remainder of the year.”
