A private members bill by Kildare North independent TD, Catherine Murphy will be debated in the Dail this Friday, 8 February.

Following confirmation by Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan that outline heads of the Government’s climate change bill will proceed to cabinet next week, Deputy Murphy (Ind-Kildare North) urged that ‘rapid progress’ needed to be made in bringing the heads to workable legislation – one that “includes specific targets.”

Her own bill, the Energy Security & Climate Change Bill 2012, published last May, will be debated in the Dáil this Friday. This will be the first time that a climate bill of this type has been debated in the Dáil chamber since 2006. The bill contains specific targets on emissions reductions and crucially, contains a commitment to dramatically reduce fossil fuel use. Deputy Murphy said if handled smartly, our adjustment to a low-carbon economy could bring massive rewards in terms of building a durable renewables industry, eliminating the €6billion annual cost of importing fossil fuels, and give Ireland a leading-edge advantage in attracting green investment, both domestic and foreign.

“We have already handed our children a legacy of financial debt. If we don’t act now, we stand the chance of leaving them and environmental catastrophe to clean up.

- Henry Bauress
