Three Boxers and one coach travelled from Ryston, Newbridge to the Alexander Palace, London for the Haringey Box Cup recently.
Chris Phelan, Dylan Carr, Dervla Duffy and coach Paddy Hughes made the trip across the Irish Sea for this major international tournament with countries competing from as far as Denmark, Sweden, Finland an even Australia.
Newbridge Coach Paddy Hughes had his hands full with all three boxers keeping him busy as all three reached the finals.
Chris Phelan gave his Australian opponent Aarron Wellman an RSC2 stoppage in the second round with a nasty cutt over his eye in the 54kg senior final.
Next into the ring was Ryston’s Dervla Duffy who was facing Svetlana Link, who is a member of the English Police Force. Duffy boxed exceptional and won every round unamiously to take another gold for Ryston in the senior 60kg final.
Finally Dylan Carr stepped through the ropes and put on one of the most entertaining fights of the tournament against the England three time ABA champion Micheal Joynson in the Youth 64kg final.
It was neck and neck, toe to toe stuff as both boxers left nothing in the ring but Carr just lost on a majority decision to Joynson and took home a silver medal.
That wasnt to be the end of the silverware tally as Ryston’s Dervla was awarded Best Female Boxer of the Tournament an award in which world champion Katie Taylor won only last year.
