NEWBRIDGE native Charlie Sweeney has hit the summit. The PBS Newbridge student currently sits pretty at the top of the RIBSA ranked players at Under 14 level and he sure is making waves in the world of snooker.
Sweeney, who plays out of the St Conleth’s CYMS Newbridge club, is coached by Irish national coach PJ Nolan and puts as many as five training session a week.
2012 has already been a fantastic year for the Newbridge youngster. He qualified to play for the Irish Under 16 team, who travelled to Wales last month.
In his own Under 14 category he won a recent ranking event in Celbridge, in Letterkenny and also won Stars of the Future event in Carlow.
At Under 16 level Sweeney won the Dublin Open and the Stars Academy All Ireland Junior Championship to name but a few.
Meanwhilem he was also a semi finalist in the Under 18 Dublin Open.
On the international front the talented Newbridge man played for the Irish team that were unlucky to lose to Wales in the Celtic Challenge tournament.
Due to points gained at ranking events throughout the season Sweeney finished up as Under 14 Irish number one this season. He also finished sixth in the Under 16 rankings for the 2011/2012 season.
Sweeney, who will sit his Junior Certificate next year, is also a dab hand at soccer and pitch and putt. He plays for both Newbridge Town and Athgarvan Pitch and Putt Club.
He is currently sponsored by Newbridge Credit Union and PDM Timber Processors but is also on the look out for further sponsorship.
