On Saturday Newbridge seconds played their second game of the season against Malahide’s first team. As expected at the beginning of the season the nerves are more prominent and this certainly seemed the case for the opening ten minutes of the game.
Play was dominated to one side of the pitch with little space being created. After both teams settled it was a game of almost equal possession, however opportunistic fast ball breaks gave both teams the chance to take shots on goal, however none strong enough to cross the line.
About 25 minuts into play one of Malahide’s forwards sent a fast high ball into the Newbridge circle which came into contact and injured left defender Jane Dunne. Not long after another high incoming ball came into contact with Newbridge sweeper Mandy Maguire’s face.
With two injuries in the back line, Newbridge brought in Grace Monaghan as sweeper who defended superbly, clearing any incoming play and placing it out of danger.
The Newbridge mid field line worked well between Ann O’Connell and Sandra Whelan and although Newbridge forward Kathleen McGovern had the pace to receive the incoming feeds, the Malahide goal keeper defended firmly.
By the second half Newbridge upped their intensity and was dominating possession, however an opportunistic ball break by Malahide from their own circle lead to a full field pitch run and Newbridge in defense had to pass the ball out over the back line, awarding Malahide a short corner. It was on this short corner that Newbridge conceded a goal.
Determined to set the scoreline straight Newbridge continued to drive the ball into Malahide’s circle. Two short corners were awarded to Newbridge however the Malahide continued to clear the hockey ball out of danger. Then with some strong passing from the mid line, Newbridge’s Lisa White sent a targeted pass to the Malahide post which Jenny Kavanagh sent flying into the back of Malahide goal.
With the score now 1-1 there was only a few minutes to try and change it. Newbridge maintained pressure on the Malahide goal but the full time whistle blow and both teams had to accept a draw. Next week Newbridge seconds take on Loreto in Dublin and will be hungry to take home a win.
