Kildare's Katelynn Phelan wins Ireland's first bronze medal at World Women’s Youth Championships

Kildare town's Katelynn Phelan has secured Ireland a first bronze medal at the World Women’s Youth Championships in Guwahati, India after an outstanding win over Aidyl Cardenas yesterday, Wednesday November 22.

The Kildare light-welter beat the American in the 64 kg quarter-final to make it into the last four.

Proud dad and coach Paddy Phelan was at ringside to watch his daughter book her ticket into the semi-finals. The Belfast light-fly Caitlin Fryers also secured bronze at the World Youths after beating Russia’s Karina Tuvakova.

She now progresses to the semi-finals tomorrow at 5pm.

The competition has so far proved to be very successful for the Irish.
