Kildare Town Chamber of Commerce welcomed a Mayo based architect to the Education Centre on Tuesday evening last to discuss good town design.
Westport Council architect Simon Wall gave a presentation to help inform on good town planning guidelines entitled Transition Town.
He discussed Westport's holistic approach to town planning which was voted the best place to live in Ireland in 2012 and has also just become a Smarter Travel demonstration town. This entails a cycling and walking infrastructure spend of €5 million over the next five years by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport.
Simon was invited to deliver his speech on the Westport experience by the Director of Services Tadhg McDonnell.
According to organisers the presentation offered a valuable opportunity on how best to manage changes proposed for Kildare town including the new and long awaited traffic management plan.
The €100, 000 LPT funded new traffic management plan for Kildare town must be comprehensive and be able to stand the test of time according to Cllr Suzanne Doyle.
“It needs to look to the future and the needs of the town for the next 15 years. Large development is imminent and the plan needs to reflect this.
“The funding is in place from LTP funds. You can see the traffic build up in the town now so the plan needs to look ahead -
In ten to 15 years time the population will increase so it must be future proofed to accommodate this.”
