Roli Sweeney, who announced his retirement from inter county football following Kildare’s exit from this year’s All Ireland qualifiers, has been appointed as assistent manager to Niall Carew in Waterford.

The Moorefield man brought an end to his 14 year career following Tyrone’s win over Kildare back in July.

Former Kildare selector, Niall Carew, took over as Waterford football manager last year and while suffering a heavy defeat in the Munster championship to Kerry, came within minutes of knocking Galway out of the Qualifiers.

Sweeney is expected to continue playing with Moorefield in 2014.
