The Kildare senior hurling championship (preliminary round) got up and running last evening (Friday 29 June) when Naas took on Clane in Sarsfields Park, Newbridge, while in Celbridge it was Ardclough who faced up to Leixlip, writes TOMMY CALLAGHAN.

At Sarsfields it was Naas who dominated for a lot of the game, pulling well clear in the second half (after Clane were reduced to 14 men, Danno Horan picking up two yellows). Corner forward, Conor O’Hehir, was in devastating form for the winners racking up a personal tally of 1-8 as Naas ran out comfortable winners on a score line of Naas 2-17 Clane 1-9.

In the second game of the evening, beaten SHL finalists Ardclough were expected to comfortably clear their first hurdle against Leixlip and while they did manage to do that, nevertheless Leixlip put in a much improved performance from when these teams met earlier in the season in the league.

Ardclough eventually won by 2-15 to 1-9 but it was only in the last ten minutes that they finally killed off a determined challenge from the boys from Leixlip.
