MARK Millham’s Naas caused an early upset in the opening round of the MDY SFC when defeating hotly fancied Sarsifleds at the county grounds on Friday evening by 0-12 to 1-8, writes TOMMY CALLAGHAN.

Naas, with plenty of bodies behind the ball and breaking quickly and intelligently, led at the break by three points with Conor Mellett in devestating form and despite losing Eamonn Callaghan at half time to what could be a groin strain, and reduced to fourteen men with some ten minutes remaining, when Ronan Joyce picked up a second yellow, they held on gallantly despite conceding a Ray Cahill goal in the 59th minute.

In the end Naas held on by that singlel point for a fully deserved win.

Friday evening results:

MDY SFC: Naas 0-12 Sarsfields 1-8.

Joe Fox Tool & Plant Hire IFC: Monasterevin 0-8 Ellistown 0-8.

Tom Cross JFC: Milltown 1-6 Castlemitchell 1-5; Clogherinkoe 1-15 Cappagh 1-5; Grangenolvan 1-13 Rheban 2-2.
