CLANE was the venue last Saturday evening as Eire Og and Leixlip could not be separated in the first round of the losers group in the Senior Hurling Championship, writes Ruth Chambers.

Eire Og/Chorra Choill: 1-7

Leixlip: 0-10

In truth Leixlip should have picked up their first win of the campaign but poor shooting ensured Eire Og took a share of the spoils.

The game was tight throughout and only a point separated the sides at the interval with Leixlip leading 0-7 to 1-3. After the break the team from the north of the county could only manage a further three points, Eire Og four, which really tells the story of this poor affair.

Eire Og opened with a bang and had the ball in the back of Conor Cunningham’s net with just 30 seconds on the clock. Full forward Joe Dempsey got away from the challenge of Niall Egan before firing to the net to give his side an early three point lead.

Leixlip didn’t open their account until the ninth minute and it came from a 65 from top scorer Paddy Murphy after his penalty was stopped on the line by Richie Whelan. Indeed it was that miss, a long with aforementioned poor shooting, that cost Leixlip victory.

Murphy added Leixlip’s second point on the ten minute mark when he struck over a free from the middle of the field.

Eire Og responded with a fine score from Joe Dempsey out on the left but it was cancelled out by another one from Murphy, this time from a free from distance, a free he struck sweetly.

By the 22nd minute Eire Og were leading 1-3 to 0-4 but Leixlip bounced back to level proceedings up by the 26th minute and indeed hit the front for the first time just before the break.

Points from Murphy (free) and Paul Maher saw the sides deadlocked but when Murphy split the posts from play Leixlip took a one point lead in to the dressing room at the break (0-7 to 1-3).

Like Eire Og did in the first half, Leixlip struck early in the second. Just 38 seconds in John Doran got forward to stretch their lead to two but it was halved when Eire Og opened their second half account with a point from JP Crotty.

By the 49th minute the side were level (1-6 to 0-9) but Leixlip should have been well in front. However, they hit five wides in a nine minute period and it cost them.

The side in maroon did get their noses in front with four minutes of normal time left on the clock when Aidan Ryan stuck over from the right but in stoppage time Deckie O’Toole ensured a share of the spoils for his side when he converted a free after he himself was impeded. The final score was Eire Og 0-10, Leixlip 1-7.
