The organisers of the annual TriAthy triathlon are bringing a new race format, called Stone Mad, to Ireland.

The event is a two-day multi-stage marathon in which competitors can build their own races by choosing different events.

Those taking part can choose the number of days and the distance they want to race, be that an ultramarathon, marathon, half marathon or a 10km.

The event will start in Athy over the weekend of July 12 to 14.

The route meanders alongside the river Barrow on its journey through villages, fields and countryside to Carlow.

The way is flat, with gentle off-road terrain.

In Kilkenny, on day two, the going gets tougher as the route climbs Mount Leinster, passing the historic Nine Stones.

Stone Mad is being run by the TriAthy organisers who secured Formula 1 star Jenson Button to its event last year. TriAthy is also on course again this May, with up to 1,500 expected to participate.
