THE Kilcock Canal Festival will open this Friday night, 28 July.
Weather permitting, the events of the weekend will kick off at the Harbour around 7.30 pm.
But according to spokesperson, Tara Lane, chairperson of the Kilcock Business Association, plans are afoot to move the event indoors if the skies are unhelpful.
“If the weather is bad we will go into St Josephs Hall for the Ballat Gala and then adjorn to O’Keeffes.
Ms. Lane said they are grateful sponsors, Waterways Ireland, Kildare County Council and our corporate sponsors, Brownes Subway, Craft Cars, The Musgrave Group and The Sammon Group and other advertisers.
“We’ve been busy scratching our heads over the last few months in order to bring you some great new festival events to keep young and old entertained and amused,” said Ms. Lane.
Among the events will be the announcement of Kilcock Person of the Year award. “Our first winner will be unveiled on our opening night,” she said.
There will also be a strong man event and an opportunity to take part in the computer XBOX FIFA tournament.. The qualifiers take place on Saturday with the finals taking place on Sunda
For those of you that don’t have the computer skills there is an water based event. Those who wish will be faced with the challenge of chipping the ball into the canal to hit targets in the water. The cash prize may come in handy.
All down through the years, feuding families have used tug of wars to settle scores.
In Leixlip, the Festival tug or war has proved a very popular event. Sports team or housing estates are invited to compete for the title. Men’s and Women’s competitions take place Sunday afternoon.
